TORO .............................................. ..................................................... ................................... The
settlements shown for Toro were located from north of Fort Portal
to the south and west for fifteen miles. A characteristic settlement
consisted of several houses within a banana grove. Small cultivated
areas for root crops were nearby. Further south in the Kasese area,
larger cultivated fields were observed. This area contained a copper
mine, copper smelter and rail terminus. These larger fields were
probably used for commercial agriculture to supply the industrial
activities of the area.
The Fort Portal area. Settlement densities here are among the highest
in Toro. Eucalyptus trees, initially from Australia, surround many
houses.
